Astigmatism is a common vision problem that affects many people worldwide. It is a condition that causes the cornea to be misshapen, resulting in blurry or distorted vision. The good news is that astigmatism can be corrected through various treatments, including LASIK and cataract surgery. In this article, we will explore the different options for correcting astigmatism and how LASIK and cataract surgery can help improve your vision.

What is Astigmatism?

Astigmatism is a refractive error that affects how the eye focuses light. Normally, the cornea is round and evenly shaped, allowing light to pass through and focus on the retina, creating a clear image. However, in astigmatism, the cornea is shaped like a football, causing light to focus on multiple points on the retina. This can result in blurry or distorted vision, and may also cause headaches or eye strain.

Astigmatism can be caused by genetics, injury to the eye, or certain eye conditions such as keratoconus. It can also occur alongside other vision problems, such as nearsightedness or farsightedness.

How is Astigmatism Diagnosed?

If you suspect that you have astigmatism, it is important to schedule an eye exam with an optometrist or ophthalmologist. During the exam, your eye doctor will perform various tests to determine if you have astigmatism, and to what degree. These tests may include:

  1. Visual Acuity Test: This test measures how well you can see letters or images from a distance. You will be asked to read letters or identify images on a chart from a specific distance.

  2. Refraction Test: This test measures your eye's refractive error, or how well your eye can focus light. You will be asked to look through a device called a phoropter and tell your doctor which lenses provide the clearest vision.

  3. Keratometry: This test measures the curvature of the cornea. Your doctor will use a keratometer to measure the shape of your cornea and determine if it is causing your astigmatism.

  4. Topography: This test creates a detailed map of the cornea, showing any irregularities in its shape. This can help your doctor determine the best treatment option for your astigmatism.

Treating Astigmatism with LASIK

LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is a popular refractive surgery that can correct astigmatism, as well as nearsightedness and farsightedness. During the procedure, a laser is used to reshape the cornea, correcting its shape and allowing light to focus properly on the retina.

To perform LASIK for astigmatism, your surgeon will create a flap in the cornea using a microkeratome or femtosecond laser. The flap is then lifted, and a laser is used to reshape the underlying corneal tissue. The flap is then placed back into position, acting as a natural bandage to help the eye heal.

LASIK is a relatively quick and painless procedure, and most patients experience improved vision within a few days. However, not everyone is a candidate for LASIK, and it is important to discuss your options with your eye doctor.

To be eligible for LASIK, you must:

  1. Be at least 18 years old

  2. Have a stable prescription for at least one year

  3. Have a healthy cornea and eye

  4. Not be pregnant or nursing

  5. Have realistic expectations for the procedure
